Many variations of the unconsuming forge exist, but most feature a framework of sorts, about two yards across, formed from crystal. Generally, a large, downward pointing cyrstal forms the top, with three to five thick spines of crystal growing out and down, much like tines on a stretched umbrella. Where these spines hit the ground, other spines jut out across the floor, connecting a spine with its nearest neighbors. The whole construction gives the impression something like a birdcage with very widely spaced bars.

An unconsuming forge gets its name from the fact that it does not burn conventional materials to produce heat, and doesn't produce smoke. Instead, it burns pure essence, fed to it either by an essence wielder, a one dot hearthstone, or a flow siphoned geomantically from a manse.

First Age artificers usually preferred unconsuming forges for small to medium-size works, because they have the following advantages:
