Many variations of the unconsuming forge exist, but most feature a framework of sorts, about two yards across, formed from crystal. Generally, a large, downward pointing cyrstal forms the top, with three to five thick spines of crystal growing out and down, much like tines on a stretched umbrella. Where these spines hit the ground, other spines jut out across the floor, connecting a spine with its nearest neighbors. The whole construction gives the impression something like a birdcage with very widely spaced bars.
An unconsuming forge gets its name from the fact that it does not burn conventional materials to produce heat, and doesn't produce smoke. Instead, it burns pure essence, fed to it either by an essence wielder, a one dot hearthstone, or a flow siphoned geomantically from a manse.
First Age artificers usually preferred unconsuming forges for small to medium-size works, because they have the following advantages:
- Portability. Forges typically weigh only a few hundred pounds and are small enough to be maneuvered by a small number of men (or even by one very strong person). Also, they have no ash of other debris to worry about, so can be changed quickly from fully active to being ready for transport (and vice versa).
- Flexibility. Since they don't produce smoke, these forges can be used nearly anywhere, even underwater. Further, they keep their heat confined within their structure, keeping their surroundings and user safe.
- Control. Those using these forges can tune their temperature very accurately, crucial to working with certain types of materials. In addition, the forge can get much hotter than conventional forges.
One mote must be committed to a forge for it to function. For as long as this mote remains committed, a small flame will burn in the forge, allowing it to be fired up to full power any time. When in active use, the forge must be fed eight motes an hour by anyone. Once essence is supplied to the forge, if it is not already lit, it must be ignited. If lit by conventional means, the fire must burn for a full day before it can be completely used. Magical flame, such as the anima of a fire aspect dragon blooded, cuts this period to an hour. A fire elemental or the Ravenous Fire spell can ignite the forge for instant use.
Instances
Wyr'palja's mausoleum contained a forge like this in an artificing workshop. It has three spines made of clear crystal. It was "liberated" by the Forgotten Circle.
